Prophet remarks: Protest turns violent in West Bengal for 2nd day

A fresh bout of clashes broke out today between police and protesters of remarks by suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma on Prophet Muhammed (PUBH) for the second consecutive day in West Bengal’s Howrah district.

A video tweeted by ANI showed tensions in a part of the district as protesters clashed with security personnel who lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the agitators, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

The police action came after stones were hurled at them during the clash in Panchla Bazaar area. The administration imposed a ban on the assembly of five or more people in the area till June 15.

Protests have been taking place in Howrah since yesterday (June 10, 2022) demanding the arrest of former BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal for their controversial remarks against Prophet Muhammad(PUBH).

On Friday, hundreds of protesters had blocked roads and railway tracks in different parts of Howrah district and clashed with police personnel when they tried to remove the blockade on a national highway stretch.

Yesterday,  two persons were killed and over two dozen people, including security personnel, were critically injured during violent protests in the eastern Indian city of Ranchi over the the controversial comments made by the two suspended BJP spokespersons.
