Rotary celebrates World Polio Day

Rotary International Bangladesh has celebrated World Polio Day across the country on Monday through various programmes, a press release said.

On this occasion, a discussion meeting was held in Gulshan. Presided over by Bangladesh National Polio Plus committee chairman Rotarian M Khairul Alam, the program was addressed by Rotary Governor Eng. MA Wahab, former governors, Governor (elect) Ashrafuzzaman Nannu, Governor (nominee) Ibrahim Khalil Al-Zayed and other leaders.

The Governor said Polio is a deadly infectious disease that usually affects children under 5 years of age. The disease spreads from person to person through contaminated water. For more than 42 years, Rotary has been working to eradicate polio worldwide.

Engineer MA Wahab mentioned that since 2007, Bangladesh has been practically free of polio, but Bangladesh was at risk of polio due to polio cases in neighboring countries.

Rotary Polio Plus committee chairman M Khairul Alam said Rotary members have spent countless volunteer hours and more than 200 crores us dollar to keep nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries polio-free.

Rotary District-3282 Governor Ruhela Khan Chowdhury, Governor-elect Engineer Matiur Rahman, Mohammad Hasnat, Mohammad Omar Ali Faisal, Emdadul Aziz Chowdhury, Mohammad Akbar Hossain, Mohammad Nazrul Islam Nantu and others spoke on the occasion in Chittagong.
