The Department of English, Daffodil International University (DIU) organized a workshop titled “Exploring The Life Cycle of the English Language Teaching Professor” on 22 October 2022 under the Teachers’ Continuous Professional Development (TCPD) initiatives, a press release said Wednesday.
Dr. Lawrence N. Berlin, Professor Emeritus, Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, USA facilitated and shared his very insightful ideas on the prospects of English graduates in academia. Prof. Mahmudul Amin from National Academy for Educational Management joined the workshop as a special guest speaker.
Dr. Berlin shared how the students of the English Department construct their identities in relation to their discipline, and its opportunities for job entry and career development.
He said that English professors conduct their own academic work like writing academic papers and books, and giving talks at conferences relevant to their specialization; they also continue to study their subject so they remain up to date on the developments happening in their field.
He advised the young scholars who want to join the academia that most professors have high degrees in their field, so they should consider getting a Ph.D. in a specialized field that they would like to teach.
Prof. A.M.M. Hamidur Rahman, Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Social Science; Dr. Liza Sharmin, Head of the Department of English joined as session chairs; and Prof. Dr. Binoy Braman, as the convener of the workshop shared his remarks.
