Renowned businessman Mahbub Jamil passes away

Former Chairman and Managing Director of Singer Bangladesh Limited Mahbub Jamil passed away on Wednesday at the Evercare Hospital. He was 83.

He joined Singer in September 1984 as marketing manager and was appointed as Managing Director on January 15, 1985 and as Chairman on October 4, 1987. He retired after serving the company for more than 24 years (1984-2009).

He continued as Chairman of the Board till April 2015. He was the former Senior Vice President, Singer Asia Limited.

Jamil also served as Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser of the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh in 2008 with the status of a cabinet minister responsible for the Ministry of Industries, Ministry of Civil Aviation & Tourism and Ministry of Youth & Sports.

He was also the President of the Foreign Investors’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry, President of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Board Member of the International Chamber of Commerce – Bangladesh, former Member of the Academic Council of BRAC University, Committee Member of Bangladesh Employers’ Federation and Founder member of American Chamber of Commerce.

He was a Member of the Board of Trustees, BishwaSahittayaKendro and a Member of the Boards of many other companies.

Singer management in a statement Wednesday said Mahbub Jamil has long been identified as the face of Singer.

“Mr. Jamil’s departure is a great loss for the business community, cultural communityand the intellectual society of the country. His lifelong contribution will remain unparrallel and the void of his absence will remain unfulfilled,” the statement said.

Singer family expressed their heartfelt condolence to the members of his bereaved family.
