Diarrhoea prevalence increasing in Chattogram

The prevalence of diarrhoea is increasing in Chattogram due to the spread of germs from waterlogging.

According to the information of the Civil Surgeon’s office, in the last 24 hours, 81 people have been treated in hospitals due to diarrhoea in 15 upazilas of Chattogram.

“More than half of the people suffering from various diseases in the Durgat area are diarrhoea patients. The number may increase,” Chattogram Civil Surgeon Dr Mohammad Ilyas Chowdhury told.

In the last week, the number of infected patients is 329. For the past five days, the number of patients suffering from diarrhoea has been increasing.

On 4 August, the number of diarrhoea patients in the district was 45; on Saturday, it stood at 82 people.

Among them, 56  people in Boalkhali; 41 people in Patia and 39 people in Chandnaish upazila were affected by diarrhoea.

Satkania Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Abdullah Al Mamun told TBS, “As the flood water recedes, patients are coming from different areas. However, patients suffering from water-borne diseases have not yet come. I am afraid that when the flood water recedes, the number of patients will increase.”

In addition to the upazila, the incidence of diarrhoea has increased in the city due to waterlogging.

Bangladesh Institute of Tropical Infectious Diseases Associate Professor Dr Mamunur Rashid told TBS, “We normally receive 7-8 patients with diarrhoea. But since the waterlogged situation, 20-22 patients are coming for treatment every day.

Many have complained about the quality of water provided by Chattogram WASA. Acknowledging the matter, Chattogram WASA has already issued a public notice in the media warning the customers.
