Women’s team makes int’l return after 4 years

Bangladesh women’s hockey team made a return to the international arena after nearly four years when they began their Women’s Hockey five-a-side Asia Cup campaign with a defeat to Indonesia in Salalah, Oman Friday.

Bangladesh lost the game 7-4 with Orpita Pal scoring three field goals for the women in red and green and Airin Riya netting the other.

They will face Chinese Taipei in their second match of the tournament, which is also a World Cup qualifier, at 8pm Bangladesh time on the same day.

Ten countries – split into two groups – are competing in the qualifying round of the women’s competition which will continue till Monday.

Bangladesh were placed in Challengers Pool with Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Iran and hosts Oman while India, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand make up the Elite Pool.

Bangladesh will play their remaining matches against Iran and hosts Oman Saturday and face Hong Kong in the last group game Sunday.

Three teams from the qualifying round will advance to the World Cup Hockey.

Bangladesh national women’s hockey team will start their Women’s Asian Hockey five-a-side World Cup Qualifier campaign from tomorrow (Friday) in Salalah, Oman with an aim to make a winning start.

On the first day of the meet, Bangladesh women’s meet Indonesia at 11 am (BST) and face Chinese Taipei at 6 pm (BST).

Ten countries– split into two groups– will compete in the qualifying round of the women’s competition which will continue till 28.

Bangladesh was placed in Challengers Pool with Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Iran and hosts Oman while India, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand were put in Elite Pool.

Bangladesh will play their remaining matches against Iran and hosts Oman on Saturday (Aug 26) and play their last group match against Hong Kong on August 27.

Three teams from the qualifying round will play the World Cup Hockey.

Bangladesh women’s hockey team is going to taking part in the international hockey nearly after four years, aiming to beat Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei and Indonesia.

Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF) was founded in 1972 while country’s first hockey stadium — Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium was built in Dhaka in1987.

Bangladesh men’s hockey team started their journey in international hockey participating in the 1st Junior World Cup for Asia/Oceania zone qualifying round in Kuala Lumpur in 1977 while the recent-concluded Women’s Juniors (U-21) AHF Cup Hockey Qualifiers was the first international tournament for Bangladesh women’s hockey team.
