3rd Sheikh Russel Day observed at DIU

Based on the theme “Sheikh Russel Diptimoy Nirvik Nirmal Durjoy (Luminous Sheikh Russel, courageous, pellucid and indomitable) 3rd Sheikh Russel Day and 60th birthday of Sheikh Russel, youngest son of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and younger brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was observed at Daffodil International University (DIU), a press release said on Wednesday. Marking the Day, Daffodil International University organized a discussion session and planted saplings of trees at the botanical garden of the university.

Professor Dr. Mostafa Kamal, Dean, Academic Affairs presided over the discussion session where Professor Dr. Md. Bellal Hossain, Dean (In-Charge) & Professor, Faculty of Allied Health Science. The program was also addressed by Dr. Liza Sharmin, Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Social Science, Dr. Mohammed Nadir Bin Ali, Registrar, Professor Dr. M A Rahim, Professor & The Head, Department of Agricultural Science, Dr. A.B.M. Kamal Pasha, Professor & The Head, Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management. Later guests planted saplings of different varieties at the Botanical Garden of the university.

While addressing as the president Professor Dr. Mostafa Kamal, Dean, Academic Affairs said, Sheikh Russel  was born on 18 October  in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka and the name “ Russel “ was given by Bangabandhu himself after his favourite  writer, renowned philosopher and noble laureate Bertrand Russel.

Very active and playful from a very early age Russel was the light of the family, but life didn’t remain playful. He had to face the harsh cruelty of life from the age of one and a half when he had to visit Dhaka Central Jail and Dhaka cantonment just to meet his beloved father, he added

Sheikh Russel was brutally assassinated along with most of his family members including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15 in 1975. At that time, he was a fourth-grader student at University Laboratory School.
