Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday directed the authority concerned to reduce import duty on four essential items – rice, edible oil, sugar and date- ahead of the upcoming Ramadan.
The directive came from the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office in the city.
“The Prime Minister has given a clear directive to decrease the duty on four items – edible oil, sugar, rice and date – on the occasion of the upcoming Ramadan, said Cabinet Secretary MdMahbubHossain while briefing reporters at the Secretariat.
Now the National Board of Revenue (NBR) would assess how much the duty can be curtailed, he said.
The PM also asked all the authorities concerned to work in a coordinated way and monitor the market so that there would be no deficit in the supply of the goods against the demand in the market, he added.
Reply to a question, the Cabinet secretary said the importers now don’t face problem to open LCs to import any essential goods.
The Cabinet also has cleared the draft of Law and Order Disruption (Speedy Trial) Act 2024, aiming to make the existing provisional law as a permanent one.
Briefing the reporters at Bangladesh Secretariat, Cabinet Secretary MdMahbubHossain said the Law and Order Disruption (Speedy Trial) Act was first promulgated in 2002 and then the effectiveness of the law was extended on several occasions through amendments.
He said the existing Law and Order Disruption (Speedy Trial) Act would be effective till April 9, 2024.
So, the Public Security Division placed the proposed law before the Cabinet, saying that this law has successfully played an effective role in curbing crimes, he added.
“The Cabinet has given the final approval to make Law and Order Disruption Offenses (Speedy Trial) Act 2024 as a permanent one. There is no change in the draft law,” said the cabinet secretary.
Besides, the Cabinet has given the final approval to the draft of National Primary Education Academy Act, 2024.
