Prothom Alo, NSU Merit Scholarship Program Launched

The formal announcement ceremony of the Media Communication and Journalism (MCJ) program scholarship by North South University in collaboration with Prothom Alo took place on Sunday. In the auditorium of North South University (AUDI 801), the formal presentation of the Prothom Alo – NSU (MCJ) Merit Scholarship Program for Spring 2024 was held at 3:00 PM. Tasmim Tabassum Chowdhury, the recipient of this merit scholarship, was awarded during the event.

On November 27, 2023 a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between North South University (NSU) and Prothom Alo for student scholarships and research collaboration. According to the MoU, two outstanding students from NSU’s Media Communication and Journalism (MCJ) program would receive scholarships for the Spring 2024 semester. The recipients, securing the top positions in the Bachelor of Social Sciences in Media Communication and Journalism (BSS in MCJ) admission exam, were mentioned in the agreement. The scholarship covers the expenses of the recipients’ four-year undergraduate studies and will be equally shared by Prothom Alo and North South University. Additionally, the university will bear the entire cost of research work.

In line with this continuity, the Media Communication & Journalism program organized the scholarship award ceremony. The Treasurer of North South University, Professor Abdur Rob Khan, presented the scholarship certificate to the student Tasmimm Tabassum Choudhury on behalf of the university, and the editor of Prothom Alo, Matiur Rahman, handed over the scholarship certificate on behalf of Prothom Alo.

Dr. Rizwan Khair, Associate Professor and Chair, of the Department of Political Science and Sociology, NSU congratulated everyone in his welcome speech. He told the students, “This is a special event for you. You are starting your journey at NSU. I hope you will come out of here with honesty and values.”

Dr. S.M Rezwan Ul Alam, Associate Professor of the Department of Political Science and Sociology, said to the students, “Journalists establish a connection between the government and the people you have taken a very brave decision by choosing to study this subject.”

Professor Sk. Taufiq M Haque, Dean (Acting) of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences said, “We have tried to build good relations with the leading media houses of Bangladesh. This show is part of that.”

Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman mentioned, “This is the beginning of our relationship with NSU. Not only scholarships, but we also want to organize more research, seminars, etc. with this university in the future.”

Treasurer of North South University Professor Abdur Rab Khan said, “This scholarship marks a bright example of collaboration between media and academia. Today’s event opened up a new horizon. Students should make good use of this opportunity.”

The event was also attended by other dignitaries, including Professor Mahbubur Rahman, Chair, Department of History & Political Science, Md Harisur Rahman, Associate Professor and coordinator of the MCJ program, along with other faculty members and newly admitted students of the MCJ program.
