Students announce new programs for Friday

Students of East West University said they will take position in front of the National Press Club at around 3pm on Friday (August 2). Before announcing the new program, the students demonstrated in front of the High Court on Wednesday (July 31).

Nafiza Jannat, the deputy coordinator of the student movement’s East West University unit, later announced the new program.
 
During the protest, police detained Dhaka University students Arif and Nahid but the demonstrators forced law enforcement to release them.
 
Bangladesh’s highest court reformed the controversial quota system on July 21 after weeks of deadly protests left at least 150 people dead. It ordered 93% recruitments based on merit. Of the remaining, 5% have been allocated for descendants of freedom fighters, 1% for minorities and 1% for the disabled and third gender.
 
The government has kept the educational institutions shut since mid-July. It is unclear when they will be reopened.
