Education minister’s house attacked in Ctg

The residence of Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury came under attack allegedly by a section of protesters from a procession of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Chattogram city’s Sholoshahar area this evening.

Eyewitnesses said two cars have been vandalized in the attack and one has been set on fire. They also vandalized some furniture and windows during the attack around 6:30pm.

Contacted, Dr Selim Akter Chowdhury, former chief health officer of Chattogram City Corporation and brother-in-law of Mohibul, said several hundred people from the procession of the anti-discrimination student movement conducted the attack in the evening.

However, Hasina Mohiuddin, mother of the minister, said the attackers were not students.

He is the eldest son of Awami politician ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, a former mayor of Chattogram.

Contacted, Trisha Das, duty officer of Panchlaish Police Station, said on information, a team of police from the police station rushed to the spot.

Earlier, around 2:30pm, responding to the protest programme called by the anti-discrimination student movement, thousands of students and mass people gathered at the New Market intersection.

After a rally at the New Market area, they brought out a procession towards Tiger Pass and Lalkhan Bazar areas.

Earlier, the students also put a barricade on the road at the Kotwali intersection.

During a visit, this correspondent found that there was no presence of law enforcers around the protest areas.
