Fakhrul urges President to form the interim govt

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday urged the President to form the interim government by Tuesday without further delay.

“I would like to emphasise that the task of forming a non-partisan government should be completed within 24 hours. As this period is rapidly coming to a close, I urge the President to dissolve Parliament and establish an interim neutral government by 2pm,” he said.

Otherwise, the BNP leader warned that the country might face political vacuum again.

Fakhrul made these remarks during a press conference at the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan, following a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee members.

“When asked if they support the students’ proposal to appoint Dr Muhammad Yunus as the head of the interim government, he said ‘It is not a matter of our support. We will provide the names to the President if he requests us.”

According to the constitution, the BNP leader said President is now the Head of State and has the sole authority to oversee the formation of the interim government.

“So, when the President calls us, we will propose the names. But, let me make one thing clear that we have full confidence in the students. We have shown solidarity with their movement and continue to support them. I would like to say that all-party considerations should be given priority in this matter.”

In response to another question, Fakhrul said their Standing Committee meeting did not discuss potential names for the interim government
