We want to work with BNP to restore democracy: Joy

Awami League president Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed Joy has expressed his interest in settling all past conflicts with his main rival BNP. Joy said, “We want to work with BNP to restore democracy.”

After the departure of Sheikh Hasina, opposition party BNP held a rally in Dhaka’s Nayapaltan on August 7. Khaleda Zia, the chairperson of the party, ordered BNP leaders and workers to refrain from retaliatory activities in that rally.

Applauding this direction of BNP Chairperson, Sajib Wazed Joy said, “I am very happy with the recent statement of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. He said, what is done is done. I say the same — let us forget the past and move forward, not indulge in the politics of revenge. We want to live together. We want to work with BNP for a fair election and restoration of democracy in Bangladesh.

He also said, ‘I believe that dialogue is very important in politics. We can argue, we can agree or disagree on an issue and eventually come to a compromise.

However, Joy told Reuters that since Sheikh Hasina has not officially resigned – the Awami League is ready to challenge the legality of the formation of an interim government while she is still Bangladesh’s prime minister and head of government.
