Heavy rain, upstream water inundate 70 villages in Feni

Continuous heavy rainfall and onrush of water from the upstream have inundated extensive areas in the Feni’s of Parshuram and Fulgazi upazilas.

Nearly 70 villages have been flooded as the Muhuri River crossed the danger level. This marks the third instance of flooding in the region since July 2.

Several parts of the Feni-Parshuram road have been submerged, disrupting road communication.

Upazila Nirbahi Officers of Parshuram and Fulgazi and  the Water Development Board confirmed the extensive flooding in both upazilas on Thuesday.

Due to the recent torrential rains and breaches in embankments, 40 villages went under water in the Parshuram upazila, including the municipal area and three unions. Around 10,000 families have been stranded.

The rising waters of the Muhuri, Silonia, and Kohua rivers have also flooded 30 villages in the Fulgazi Upazila, impacting 4,000 families.

Most roads in these areas are under water, causing severe difficulties for residents.

According to the Water Development Board, water level in the Muhuri River is 55 centimeters above the danger mark. The local administration is preparing to manage the flood situation.

Tania Bhuiyan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Fulgazi,  said that rising waters in the Muhuri, Silonia, and Kohua rivers have flooded 30 villages in Fulgazi Union, Munshihat Union, and Amjadahat Union.

Afroza Habib, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Parshuram,  said that there were already 12 breaches in the embankments before the flood. The recent heavy rains and upstream water have exacerbated the situation, flooding nearly 40 villages in Parshuram.

Villages in Parshuram Municipality such as Baurkhuma, Baurpathar, Dublachad, Bilonia, Anantapur, Berabaria, Kolapara, and Mirzangor, as well as several other villages in the region, have been submerged.

In the Chitholia Union, villages such as Chandana, Palpara, and several others are also affected. In the Boxmohammad Union, villages including Satkujia and Charigram have been flooded, affecting around 10,000 families.

The Feni Bilonia regional highway is also submerged in parts of Fulgazi and Parshuram, cutting off road travel.

Deputy Commissioner Shahina Akhtar said they are monitoring the flood situation, and local authorities are actively working to address the crisis.
