BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said India cannot win the love of the Bangladeshi people by providing shelter to Bangladesh’s ‘enemy’ Sheikh Hasina, who was forced to flee the country.
Speaking at a discussion meeting, he urged the country’s people to support the interim government, led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, by providing their full backing to get the country back on track.
“I want to make it clear that India cannot earn the love of the Bangladeshi people by sheltering the enemy of Bangladesh who was forced to escape from the country. I don’t believe that will happen,” the BNP leader said.
He said it is now the duty of BNP leaders and activists to patiently embrace the new chapter of the country that has begun so that no one can undermine the victory achieved through a student-led mass movement.
Fakhrul accused the Awami League of conspiring from New Delhi to undermine the freedom achieved by ousting the autocratic ruler Hasina.
He warned that those who are indulging in various misdeeds to outshine people’s victory are not patriots; “They’re traitors. You (BNP leaders and workers) must resist them and defeat them through another struggle.”
The BNP leader said the sons of Bangladesh brought the second independence of the country by sacrificing their blood. “We can’t destroy it. One fascism is gone; we cannot import a new fascism. I am talking about neo-fascism because the Awami League is conspiring, sitting in Delhi, to foil this (victory of the people).”
He said the students have taught the politicians a new lesson through the recent movement what everyone should accept. “I would like to request all that we have become independent, but not yet stable. We have not yet been able to establish democracy in that way. There’s now a caretaker government. We all have to support the government and keep it on solid ground,” the BNP leader said.
Fakhrul said those who are running the current interim government do not understand politics or they do not do politics. “They’ve come to office for a short period of time and they’re trying to pull back the country from destruction (by the previous regime).”
He warned the BNP leaders to refrain from making any negative comments against the interim government or indulging in negative activities.
“We can observe and help it (govt). Inshallah we will be successful this time, like in the past. We’ll be able to form a representative parliament of the people through a fair election and thus form a government,” the BNP leader said.
Fakhrul said people should not let the youth, who have woken up, fail. “We must move forward by aligning with their hopes, desires, and dreams.”
Abdus Salam Talukder Smrity Sangsad arranged the program at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 25th death anniversary of former BNP Secretary General Abdus Salam Talukder. On August 20, 1999, Salam Talukder died on the way to Singapore for medical treatment.
