Dr Yunus calls for active media role in interim govt’s oversight

Speaking at a meeting with the editors of various national newspapers at the Chief Adviser’s official residence Jamuna on Tuesday (Sept 3), Dr Yunus emphasized the crucial role of the media in driving state reforms.

The Chief Adviser urged the media to publish news freely and thus accelerate the government’s initiatives aimed at reforming public institutions.

Seeking the cooperation of all in ensuring effective reforms across various state bodies, Dr Yunus said, “We have a unique opportunity, born out of the student-led movement, to reform the state and elevate the nation to new heights. If there are mistakes or flaws in the government’s actions, the media must bring them to light.”

After the meeting, CA’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam briefed the media, reiterating Dr. Yunus’s call for an active media role in government oversight.

Alam also mentioned that the United Arab Emirates government had pardoned 57 Bangladeshis who had been imprisoned, in solidarity with the anti-discrimination student movement.

Dr Yunus met 20 editors from the country’s print media at the state guest house, Jamuna.

The discussion covered a range of issues, with the editors urging the government to take more proactive steps, including reforms to the Election Commission.

Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam spoke to journalists outside Jamuna, highlighting the need for national unity and significant reforms under the current administration. “We have shared our expectations to the government regarding several critical reforms, including constitutional amendments, strengthening local government, and transforming autonomous bodies such as the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Human Rights Commission, and the Election Commission into truly people-oriented institutions. “

Mahfuz Anam also stressed the importance of granting autonomy to state-controlled media outlets such as BSS, BTV, and Radio Bangladesh, allowing them to perform their duties professionally and without governmental interference.

Dr Yunus’s appeal for media vigilance underscores the importance of a free press in ensuring accountability and transparency during the interim government’s tenure
