Major rivers continued to rise following onrush of water from upstream amid medium to heavy rainfalls at places in the Brahmaputra basin during the last 24 hours ending at 9 am Saturday.
Officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water levels of major rivers might continue to rise during the next few days, but will flow below their respective danger marks (DM) in the basin.
A bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB today forecasted that water levels of the Brahmaputra and Jamuna are rising and flowing below DM at all points.
“Water levels of these two major rivers may continue to rise till the next five days, but may flow below their respective DM in the basin,” the bulletin said.
Water levels of Teesta may rise slowly in the next 24 hours, remain steady for the next 24 hours followed by fall in the subsequent 24 hours and may flow below DM.
“Meanwhile, water levels of the Dharla and Dudhkumar may remain stable for the next 24 hours, may fall in the next 48 hours and flow below DM,” the bulletin added.
“In the upstream Indian states, the recorded rainfalls during the past 24 hours till 9am today were 141mm at Cherrapunji, 63mm at Coochbehar and 55mm at Silchar points,” the bulletin said.
The recorded rainfalls during the same period were 177mm at Kurigram, 83mm at Chilmari, 50mm at Jamalpur, 54mm at Pateshwari and 58mm at Kawnia points in the Brahmaputra basin.
Despite further rise in their water levels, the Dharla was flowing below DM by 211cm at Kurigram while Dudhkumar was flowing below DM by 115cm at Patweshari point in Kurigram at 9am today.
The Brahmaputra was flowing below DM by 230cm at Noonkhawa, 277cm at Hatia and 248cm at Chilmari points in Kurigram at 9 am today.
The Jamuna was flowing below DM by 301cm at Fulchhari, 284cm at Bahadurabad, 257cm at Shaghata, , 283cm at Sariakandi, 291cm at Kazipur and 265cm at Sirajganj points in the basin at 9 am today.
Talking to BSS this afternoon, Chief Engineer for Rangpur Zone of BWDB Md. Mahbubur Rahman said that there is no possibility of another flood in the coming days despite water levels of major rivers maintaining a rising trend.
