VGF rice distributed to fishermen in Gaibandha

Rice under the Vulnerable group feeding (VGF) scheme is being distributed among the fishermen, whose livelihood is fully dependent on catching and selling fish.

The government imposed a 22-day ban on Hilsha catching, selling, hoarding and transporting across the country from October 13 to November 03.

As the livelihood of most of the fishermen is dependent on catching and selling fish, they may face difficulties during the ban period.

Considering the situation, the government took initiative to mitigate their hardships by distributing VGF rice among 5,550 fishermen.

The VGF rice was distributed among 150 registered fishermen at Saghata upazila in the district on Friday.

District fisheries officer Abdur Rashed distributed the rice among the fishermen in a function held on the premises of Union parishad complex as the chief guest.

A large number of fishermen, social workers, public representatives were present on the occasion.

Various types of activities, including conducting mobile courts at hat and bazaars, motivational campaign at crowded places, leaflet distribution, pasting posters at important places and conducting drives in the rivers are going on in full swing at the directives of the high officials of the fisheries department.

Each of the registered fishermen is getting 25kgs of rice, he added.
