A prisoner committed suicide by hanging himself in the Brahmanbaria District Jail on Thursday night.
The deceased Md Jewel, 34, was the son of Abu Chan Mia of Charchartala village in Brahmanbaria’s Ashuganj upazila. He had been in the Brahmanbaria District Jail on charges of killing his wife in 2020.
Md Ikramul Haque Nahid, acting jail superintendent of the district jail and the district administration’s executive magistrate, said Jewel was under trial in the case of killing his wife. “We came to know that he was a drug addict,” he said.
On Thursday night, Jewel hanged himself by tying a towel with the prison cell’s grills, said Md Ikramul Haque Nahid.
“When the prison guards saw him in this condition, they rushed him to the prison hospital. There, the physician declared him dead. Later, he was taken to the district Sadar hospital, where the on-duty physician also declared him dead after examinations,” he elaborated.
Prison Guard Ripon Barua had been suspended and a departmental case had been filed against Chief Jailer Abdur Rashid and Assistant Jailer Uttam Kanti Barua in this connection, said the acting jail superintendent.
The body of the deceased was handed over to the family after the post-mortem on Friday morning, he added.
