Ariful Haque delivered a sensational all-round performance to lead Rangpur Division to a commanding 101-run victory over Rajshahi Division in their fourth-round match of the National Cricket League (NCL) at Rajshahi Stadium on Monday. Ariful, who had earlier scored a brilliant century in Rangpur’s first innings, returned with the ball to claim 3-16, dismantling Rajshahi’s chase as they were bowled out for 161 in their pursuit of 263.
Rangpur’s victory saw them rise to second place in the standings with five points from four matches, just behind Sylhet Division, who have six points. The result was never in doubt for Rajshahi, who found themselves in dire straits on Day 3 when they were reduced to a precarious 61-6. Despite a valiant fight from No. 7 batter Golam Kibria, who struck a defiant 56 off 65 balls, including 10 fours and one six, Rajshahi’s resistance was not enough. Captain Sunzamul Islam was the only other notable scorer with 23 runs.
In addition to Ariful’s match-winning spell, the efforts of Robiul Haque, Abdul Gaffar Saqlain, and Abu Halim, who all picked up two wickets each, ensured Rajshahi were never able to recover. Earlier in the match, Ariful had struck a brilliant 103 in Rangpur’s first innings total of 189 all out, and Rajshahi failed to gain any advantage, being dismissed for the same score.
Rangpur then posted 262 in their second innings, setting Rajshahi a challenging target of 263 to win. However, the defeat has left Rajshahi languishing at the bottom of the table in sixth place, with just three points from four matches.
Rangpur’s well-rounded performance highlighted their strength in all departments, and the victory firmly places them in the hunt for the top spot as the NCL continues to progress. Rajshahi, on the other hand, will need to regroup and find a way to bounce back if they hope to remain competitive in the tournament.
