Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested a Rohingya youth along with firearms and a large stash of Yaba pills at Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district on Tuesday.
The arrest took place around 9:30 PM on Tuesday in Anwar Project area under the jurisdiction of Hnila Border Outpost (BOP) of BGB Battalion-2.
The arrested, identified as Md. Noor Rashid, 25, resides in Block-A of Leda FDMN Camp in Teknaf. He is reportedly an active member of a notorious Abul Kalam gang within the camp, known for engaging in various criminal activities.
Acting on secret information, the border enforcers were informed that a shipment of drugs might enter Bangladesh from Myanmar. Upon receiving the information, a BGB patrol team was stationed in the area. Around 9:10 PM, the team observed three individuals crossing the zero line on a wooden boat and moving toward the Keora forest on Naf River’s bank at Anwar Project and challenged them.
Sensing the team’s presence, two of them jumped into Naf River and swam back to Myanmar, while the third suspect, Rashid, was captured along with the boat.
A subsequent search of the boat yielded a one-shooter gun (LG), one round of ammunition and two plastic bags containing 100,000 Yaba tablets.
During interrogation, Rashid admitted to being involved in drug trafficking from Myanmar to Bangladesh for a long time.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Mohiuddin Ahmed, the commander of BGB Battalion-2 in Teknaf, stated that legal proceedings are underway to hand over the arrested suspect, along with the seized Yaba tablets, weapons, and ammunition, to Teknaf Model Police Station.
