Jahangirnagar University (JU) marked its 54th founding anniversary with vibrant celebrations.
A colourful procession, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Kamrul Ahsan, began at the Faculty of Business Studies and concluded at the Selim Al Deen Muktamancha at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
The event saw participation from administrators, deans, department heads, faculty members, officials, staff, and students.
The day featured various events, including prayers for anti-discrimination movement martyrs, blood group tests, a commemoration at Selim Al Deen Muktamancha, and cultural performances by ‘Kaltan Bidya Niketan.’
Friendly football and handball matches were held, along with a pitha fair and anti-discrimination art displays by the Fine Arts Department. Evening programs included cultural events and a tribute to the movement.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Kamrul Ahsan stated, “Jahangirnagar University, once a haven for life and nature, has entered its 55th year today, though we have sadly lost much of this environment. Following the mass uprising of 2024, Jahangirnagar, like the rest of the nation, has become a symbol of freedom from discrimination and injustice. The enthusiastic participation on University Day reflects this spirit. Wishing everyone a joyful University Day.”
Jahangirnagar University officially began its journey on January 12, 1971, as the country’s only fully residential university.
It was inaugurated by the then Governor of East Pakistan and University Chancellor, Rear Admiral SM Ahsan.
The university started the academic year 1970-71 on January 4, with 150 students enrolled in four departments: economics, geography, mathematics, and statistics. Renowned chemist Professor Dr. Mofiz Uddin Ahmad served as its first Vice-Chancellor.
Since 2001, January 12 has been celebrated as ‘University Day.’
