BGMEA congratulates Dr. Rubana Huq on her new appointment as the VC of AUW

The immediate past President and the current Director of the Board of BGMEA, Dr. Rubana Huq, has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the Asian University for Women (AUW), Chattogram, Bangladesh. The BGMEA Board congratulates Dr. Huq on her new appointment.

“This is a position well earned and a testament to Dr. Huq’s affection for knowledge. The BGMEA Board is proud of her such accomplishment,” remarked BGMEA President Faruque Hassan.

The BGMEA Board thanks the Chair and Members of the Board of Trustees of the AUW for appointing Dr. Huq as the new Vice Chancellor.

AUW has, undoubtedly, opened the path to thousands of women to dream big and be fearless. Dr. Huq, a poet and a business person, played a key role in launching AUW’s ‘Pathways for Promise’ program that paves the way for exceptionally talented female workers from Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) factories to pursue their dream of higher education.

In celebration of this momentous occasion, BGMEA pledges further to increase the participation of garment workers in AUW. “BGMEA started collaboration with the Asian University for Women in 2016 to provide free education to female garment workers. We are aiming to increase the number of enrolment from RMG industry to 500 within next two years.”

Currently around 90 young garment workers are pursing higher studies at AUW with the support from their respective employers.

Needless to mention that 4 million workers are directly employed in the RMG industry, 60% of them are woman. Through this industry women have got the opportunity to be economically independent, socially empowered and aware about their rights and dignity. Now-a-days women’s participation is increasing in top positions including in technical departments and they are performing well. The new role of Dr. Huq would pave the way for more female workers to pursue higher studies.

BGMEA assures its continued engagement in empowering women, particularly through facilitating higher education for the workers of the RMG industry.
