BGMEA lauds PM for power coverage milestone

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the achievement of bringing 100 percent of Bangladesh under power coverage.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan said the Prime Minister has achieved another milestone in her journey towards development with the inauguration of the 1320-MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plant at Patuakhali’s Payra on Tuesday.

”Our heartiest congratulations and sincere thanks to Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her achievement in bringing Bangladesh under 100 percent electricity coverage. This historic landmark will open doors to new opportunities for Bangladesh,” he said in a statement.

He also congratulated the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister and the State Minister to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources for this remarkable achievement.

He said the Prime Minister, who has a unique combination of exemplary courage and vision, has been steadily steering Bangladesh towards prosperity. She is not only a visionary leader but also a great achiever who has proved her mettle once again by fulfilling her promise to illuminate every house in Bangladesh with electricity.

“We are thankful to the Honorable Prime Minister for presenting the nation with this historic landmark which will usher in a new era of growth and prosperity in Bangladesh as the 100 percent electricity coverage will not only illuminate every house but also power up economic development in the country,” he added.

He further said, “While the 100 percent electricity coverage will improve rural people’s quality of life, it will spur growth on a range of socioeconomic fronts. It will also pave the way for new business ventures, thus creating employment opportunity for more people.”

“The incredible success in the power and energy sector will help strengthen the standing of Bangladesh as an attractive destination of investment,” he added.

The achievement has put Bangladesh ahead of India and Pakistan among the South Asian nations to illuminate every house with electricity.

Faruque Hassan said, “Bangladesh has emerged as a role model of development in the world under the prudent and visionary leadership of Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and the country is determined to continue to its indomitable march forward.”

“To sustain the Bangladesh’s development momentum, the government has taken a number of mega infrastructure development projects including Padma Bridge, Dhaka metro rail, construction of 3rd terminal of Dhaka airport, Dhaka Elevated Expressway, Paira Deep Sea Port, 4 lane expansion of major highways in Bangladesh, and Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant,” he noted.

Expressing thanks to the government for taking such time-befitting projects, the BGMEA President said the mega projects, once completed, will help not only to boost trade but also augment the image of Bangladesh internationally.

“We are highly optimistic that the vision set by our Honorable Prime Minister for turning Bangladesh into a developed country by 2041 will come true. Thus the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will become a reality,” he added.
