Business leaders have urged for the restoration of law and order to ensure safety of their production units following the incidents of arson attacks on factories.
They came up with the call at a press conference organised by the International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICC Bangladesh) at a hotel in Dhaka.
Speaking at the event, ICC Bangladesh President Mahbubur Rahman said the country established a good reputation in the global market exporting ready-made garments (RMG) products.
“It should not be smashed. So, law and order must be restored immediately to put the economy back on track.”
He said, “Businesspersons always want proper policy and security to do business peacefully for the sake of the country’s economic development. We are not worried about the government changeover.”
Ha-Meem Group Managing Director AK Azad said as presidents of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) are not present here to speak on the current situation of business and economy, the ICC Bangladesh has taken the initiative.
“Now we need to restore law and order, run factories, ensure the safety of general people, and activate police to put the economy back on track,” said Azad, also a former president of the FBCCI.
Mentioning that around 40 lakh people work in the garment industry, he said many factories have been burnt and vandalised recently which made the businesspersons worried.
“Every day, international buyers want to know about their product delivery but we could not ensure it due to the current situation in the country. Safety and security are crucial to operating factories. Our main aim is to restore the economy,” he added.
Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) President Anwar-ul Alam Chowdhury welcomed Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus as the chief of the interim government.
He urged them to take proper initiative to avoid any damage to business and the economy.
