Chittagong port operations normal, clearance slows due to security issues

The activities of Chittagong Port, which came to a standstill following the enforcement of curfew on Sunday, have become normal.

However, import-export operations at Chittagong Port are frequently suspended due to security concerns.

However, port officials reported that activities within the port are proceeding as usual.

Port officials confirmed that the movement of goods within the port is normal. Nevertheless, clearance operations are experiencing delays due to sluggish performance by various agencies, including customs.

Additionally, C&F agents are refraining from releasing goods due to security concerns stemming from recent violence in the country. Traders can only release goods from Chittagong Port after completing customs clearance.

Chittagong Port Authority’s Secretary Md Omar Faruq said that internal activities at the port are functioning normally. However, importers are hesitant to clear goods from the port due to safety concerns outside the port area.

He added that 5,000 TEUs containers were loaded and unloaded from ships at Chittagong Port in the last 24 hours.

During this period, 220 TEUs containers were cleared, and 2,200 TEUs containers were transported to various depots.

Since the announcement of the government change on Monday (August 5), several significant public and private facilities in the city have been attacked. Police stations have been set on fire, leading to the complete closure of the port that afternoon for security reasons.
