Electrolyte drinks hold promise for local market

Proper BSTI regulation imperative to increase investment, revenue earning Standardisation of electrolyte drinks would open up new windows of opportunities for the country’s economy and market players, according to industry insiders. Given its popularity as well as promise, Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has recently taken steps to set standards for manufacturing and marketing electrolyte drinks at home.

Electrolyte drinks are quite popular all over the world for its health benefits. During the scorching heat, it is crucial to maintain hydration. One of the most effective ways to avoid dehydration is to ensure proper intake of different minerals like sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

Consuming electrolyte drinks can help with that since they help maintain the right balance of fluids in the body. These drinks are particularly beneficial for those involved in physical activities (athletes, sportsmen, etc.) or arduous tasks.

Because of its health benefits, these drinks are getting popular day by day worldwide and have gained considerable popularity in Bangladesh in recent times. Electrolyte drinks as a category also hold promise for the local market as well as the economy.

As of 2024, the electrolyte drinks market in Bangladesh is closely tied to the broader energy and sports drinks sector, which is projected to reach approximately US$128.5 million. This market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.61 per cent, reaching about US$185.4 million by 2029.

However, this promising market has hit a snag owing to the absence of standards set for this category of beverage, the BSTI has confirmed.

“We understand that there is a huge market for electrolyte drinks, which has the potential to bear fruit for all stakeholders and benefit our economy. Considering this, the BSTI has been working to set standards for this category. Once the standards are finalised, local manufacturers can get the licence and market their products,” BSTI’s Deputy Director (CM) Mohammad Arafat Hossain reportedly said.

Industry players opine that such a step would not only help streamline the market but also result in positive consequences for all the market players, including consumers.

While many consumers shy away from these drinks due to quality issues, BSTI licence will make sure that electrolyte drinks meet safety and quality benchmarks, reducing health risks. This will lure in more consumers and help in scaling up the market as well.

Moreover, BSTI standards will promote a reliable and safe marketplace, benefiting producers, consumers, and regulatory bodies alike. A full-fledged local electrolyte market will also come with another avenue of revenue for the government while reducing dependency on imports.
