Instability in onion market again

The prices of onion in the country have been increasing rapidly after India has imposed a ban on onion import till March next year.

During a visit to some local markets on Saturday morning, including Rampura bazar, Uttar Badda, Modya Badda, Godaraghat, Ulan bazar the local markets, it was found that local onions are being sold at Tk 240 in the capital, which was Tk 120-140 a day before.

Meanwhile, Indian onions are being sold at Tk 200-220.

On Thursday (December 7), a notification in this regard was issued by the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

When the news spread in the Bangladesh’s markets, the traders were starting selling onions at Tk 180-190 and the Indians were at Tk 140-150.

Earlier on August 20, the Revenue Department of the Indian Finance Ministry imposed a 40 per cent duty on onion exports to Bangladesh, causing a hike in the price of the item mainly used as spice in local markets.
