NCDC launches National Guideline on Hypertension

The Non-Communicable Disease Control Program (NCDC) has recently launched a ‘National Guideline on Hypertension 2nd edition’ with the technical support of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the National Heart Foundation (NHN), said on a press release.

The JICA said that the guideline will help Bangladeshi physicians to improve their responsibility for patients with hypertension while ensuring essential and high-quality healthcare services.

According to the Bangladesh Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Risk Factor Survey 2022, hypertension in adults aged 18-69 years was 23.5 per cent in general, 24.1 per cent in males, and 23.0 per cent in females.

The National Guidelines for Management of Hypertension (1st Edition) in Bangladesh was developed in 2013 by NCDC.

They worked with eminent doctors and experts, reviewing various international guidelines on the treatment and prevention of hypertension and heart diseases to create the first edition.

The second edition was launched due to the global achievement in medicine with updates in the light of new evidence and practices.

JICA’s technical cooperation project for ‘Strengthening Health Care Systems for Organizing Communities’ (known as SHASTO and ended in 2022) closely worked with the NCDC and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to develop and implement the NCDC’s program activities, including promoting the NCDs management model to prevent hypertension and diabetes. JICA expressed gratitude for the efforts to promote the prevention of NCDs and celebrated launching the National Guideline as one of the project’s outputs.

In addition, JICA has launched a new succeeding project named ‘Project for Strengthening Health Care Systems for Preventing Non-communicable Diseases’ in September 2023 with continuous collaboration between JICA and the DGHS, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW).

Professor Dr. Mohammad Robed Amin, Line Director, Non-Communicable Disease Control Program, Directorate General of Health Services, welcomed all guests and participants as a chairperson.

Professor Dr. Md. Titu Miah, Director General, Directorate General of Medical Education; KOMORI Takashi, Senior Representative, JICA Bangladesh; Professor Khondker Abdul Awal (Rizvi), Secretary General, National Heart Foundation Bangladesh; and Professor Dr. Ahmedul Kabir, Additional Director General, Directorate General of Health Services, has attended the event.
