Production target of egg, milk and meat exceed in Khulna

The production target of egg, milk, and meat, fixed by the Livestock Department, has been exceeded in the 2022-23 year in all ten districts of Khulna division.

The production target of hen and duck eggs was 306.50 crore whereas the production was 334.55 crore which was 9.15 percent higher against the fixed target of egg production. A total of 171.56 crore of eggs were surplus meeting the annual demand of 163.15 crore of eggs.

Besides, the production target of cow, goat and buffalo milk was 13.09 lakh metric tonnes whereas the production was 13.90 lakh metric tonnes which was 6.20 percent higher than the fixed target of production.

The division needs 14.33 lakh metric tonnes of milk annually but last year there was a shortage of 0.43 lakh metric tonnes.

The production target of cow, goat, buffalo and poultry meat was 9.65 lakh metric tonnes whereas the production was 10.24 lakh metric tonnes which was 5.93 percent higher against the fixed target of meat production. A total of 3.36 lakh metric tonnes of meat were surplus meeting the annual demand of 6.88 lakh tonnes of meat.

Khulna district livestock officer Dr Md. Shariful Islam today told BSS the production target has been exceeded due to supervision, proper advice and training for the farmers of those firms.

Moreover, in the last fiscal year, the production had increased for the important roles played by various government and non-governmental organizations.

Though the production of milk has increased 319 percent to nearly 100 lakh tonnes in almost 10 years, it is still lower than the present demand of over 152 lakh tonnes.

Meat and egg production surged 496 percent and 198 percent respectively in a decade between fiscals 2009-10 and 2018-19, according to the Department of Livestock Services (DLS).

Analysts termed the development a success of the country. Consistent economic growth, consumers’ rising purchasing power and engagement of young-educated people have helped the country become self-sufficient in livestock.
