A few lessons from the Pori Moni affair for all

Now that Pori Moni has got bail, public temperature will hopefully  cool down and people will pay attention to other issues as well. This is good news for Pori Moni – a bail is always good news- but not so for media who had found a very lucrative sector to report on and pass comments.  But all good things and bad things do come to an end.

However, the event is very educational for all people and on all sides. It gave us an opportunity to observe various segments of society and power players inter-acting and ultimately expressing their own position, status and clout. So for the next time when there is an encore a few possible tips.

1. Don’t throw stones at others while living in a glass building. The shiny reflections may dazzle for a while but it doesn’t last. The reality of the fragility of the glass will assert itself in the end.

2. Don’t bite the hands that feed you. When the first bite is given, the feeder will yelp with pain but remember that he has another hand himself, many other hands he feeds and you are just one of the many he feeds. So never overestimate the power of your own bite and always admire the hand you bite too. Power is all in the end.

3. Don’t accuse without sufficient evidence. It has to be proven no matter how sensational it sounds publicly. And if the accused is powerful, the chances are that you may get whacked if not proven. So moderation is a useful addiction to have if you want to survive.

4. Don’t accuse people of crimes like drinking, sex related issues etc which are no longer considered crime in general by society because many/most do it. Saying that bribe is bad when most take bribes doesn’t cut ice. So have a better and credible plan if you want to charge someone. Maybe reading a book…

5. Don’t use gender trashing terms like “ Night queens” when most are also keen to know about the “Night Kings” who run the Queens. Please learn more about what society thinks about its rich, famous and powerful before creating a public relations disaster.

6. Don’t try to protect the rich on the basis of rights like blackmailing. Nobody likes the rich so don’t justify arrests on the grounds of protecting the rich.

7. Stop marching down accused to the court which makes the prisoner look great and noble and the law enforcers as victimizers. Do it for all or none at all.

8. Try to understand how social media works before arresting high profile persons with followings over 5000.Porimoni has 20 million. Also avoid arresting girls particularly attractive looking ones. And put a hijab on them. Pori Moni in jeans and shirt looked so defiant that she won many followers just by standing up to the establishment without doing anything as she walked down surrounded by a bunch of embarrassed cops.

9. Though it’s not significant, public opinion does exist and can exert pressure though not much especially when it’s around a person who doesn’t belong to either AL or the BNP.

10. Please follow the above mentioned lessons and brush your teeth regularly.
