Curbing Covid: Everyone must play responsible role

The indifference and whimsy being observed almost everywhere, including on the roads, in bazaars and in public transports, after the lifting of the strict restrictions imposed to prevent covid infection cannot help but worry us. There are no hygiene rules being observed anywhere! In the current situation, experts say, the situation could become risky again. We see that the daily death rate had been over two hundred for around three weeks at a stretch. However, since the beginning of this month, the rate of infection in the country has started declining. Hopefully, if everyone remains aware and adheres to the hygiene rules, the mortality rate can be reduced. It is sad but true that almost everyone now knows at least a little about what to do to prevent this deadly virus but is reluctant to comply with it. We have experienced how terrible the consequences can be if hygiene protocols are violated.

Prevention is better than cure. Although coronavirus is deadly, it is not that there is no way to prevent it. The situation of hygiene rules violations we see in the media almost everywhere since the lockdown was lifted could worsen again. It is not possible to continue the lockdown month after month. In this case, the main approach to protect ourselves is to follow the hygiene rules. We know that, in some countries of the world, they have brought the situation under control by simply following strict hygiene rules after easing or lifting the lockdown. Many countries have even been able to recover from the crisis. But the apathy and reluctance that can be noticed in our public sphere is tantamount to committing suicide.

As we have seen, there is a serious lapse in implementing the recommendations made by the experts to the government and the decisions taken by the policymakers in this regard. Confusion and lack of coordination have been noticed in the implementation of lockdown. Again, many did not follow the instructions issued by the government. As a result, the situation soon turned disastrous.

The whole country is still at risk, so there is no alternative to responsibility from every quarter. At the same time, there is no alternative but to implement mass immunization activities in a well-planned manner. The Ministry of Health and the health department has repeatedly said there is no vaccine crisis. Huge vaccines have already arrived, and there are enough in the pipeline. But we see crises and irregularities in vaccine management. However, even though there is not enough stock of vaccines in the country, there is a hope that the interest among the general people in vaccination has increased. About three crore citizens are waiting for vaccines after registering on the Surokkha app. Against this backdrop, it is important to strengthen the vaccination campaign. The number of deaths due to Covid infection has exceeded 23,000 in the country. There is no chance to avoid this reality. If the infection goes up again, the health system may collapse. There is no alternative to the awareness and responsibility of everyone in their respective fields so that such a situation does not arise due to reckless movements of the people. If we do not protect ourselves, our families and society will also be at risk. We want people to follow the rules of hygiene – that is why all quarters need to make a concerted effort.
