The Department of Law, North South University has organised a seminar on “Climate Justice: Looking for an alternative climate locus standi” on the 28th July, 2022, a press release said Saturday.
Professor M. Ismail Hossain, Pro VC of North South University, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Professor Omar Jah, Pro VC of the Islamic University of Technology, was the invited speaker. The seminar commenced with the introductory remarks from Professor Md. Rizwanul Islam, chair, Department of Law, North South University. Professor Islam briefly pointed out the importance of locus standiand the Gambia’s potential contribution to this in the future development of the concept in international law.
The speaker started his speech with both good and bad news. The good news, as he termed, is how, we have all begun to feel the importance of saving the climate. However, the bad news is that we are not working towards betterment.
The definition of “Climate Justice” according to World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was elaborately discussed by Professor Jah. He portrayed his concerns on the consequences of human activities on the climate and also pointed out some steps taken to address climate changes, such as the Rio Earth Summit (ECO92) and Kyoto Protocol (1997) prior to UN Climate Summit (CoP26) Glasgow, 2021.
The seminar was moderated by SaquibRahman, a senior lecturer at the NSU Department of Law, who also coordinated a question-and-answer session at the end of the programme.
