Ethics and Diversity Club of North South University (NSU) organized a seminar on “The world has an Achilles’s heel: a moral argument that NATO should be dismantled” on August 7, 2022 at the Syndicate Hall of NSU, a press release said Monday.
The main speaker of the event was Prof. Dr. Norman Kenneth Swazo, director, office of research-NSU and professor of Philosophy, Department of History and Philosophy, in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, NSU.
The chief guest of the event was Barrister Shamim Haider Patwary, Member of Parliament, People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Md. Rizwanul Islam, chair, Department of Law, North South University. Advocate Saquib Rahman, faculty advisor of Ethics and Diversity Club and senior lecturer, Department of Law, NSU hosted the seminar.
The event was also attended by representatives from the Russian Embassy, Bangladesh- Anton Chernov, political counsellor and Aleksei Golubkib, second secretary.
With reference to the title of the event, Prof. Norman began his presentation with the story of the Achilles Heel – how the Greek mythological figure Achilles had a weakening heel after his mother had dipped him (holding him by the heel) into the River Styx. The nuclear defence of super powers of the world and a treaty based regional military alliance like the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) presents the world with a specter of global genocide and are an inducement of calamity. He believes that there happens to be a sight of mortal danger as the global nuclear warhead inventories are increasing – statistically, as per the Federation of American Scientists, there are 12,700 nuclear warriors currently.
