Printed books being edited to spread propaganda: Dipu Moni

A group is trying to spread propaganda by editing the already printed textbooks of the new curriculum, Education Minister Dipu Moni has said.

“They are trying to brainwash the students, but they would not be successful,” the minister said while attending the fourth convocation of the Jessore University of Science and Technology on Saturday.

She said the students will learn and know about the world they are living in. “The government will do everything it can to keep their mindset and thinking normal.”

She further said that the government wants to build a smart Bangladesh. “For this, there is no alternative to education to create smart citizens. The government is working on educational programs to help create smart nationals. A group wants to interrupt this process.”

Regarding universities, the education minister said that in the future, every district will have universities. She also advised the existing universities to not admit more students than their available seats.

“In the future, only one exam will be taken for admissions into colleges and universities. Frequent examinations are not very beneficial,” Dipu Moni said.

One of the convocation speakers, Independence Day Award recipient, Professor Dr Hasina Khan said: “There is no alternative to research to advance our country. It is thrilling to spend time researching. It is actually possible to learn new things through research. Therefore, those who are able should take advantage of the opportunity.”

Recently, the government had directed the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) authorities to withdraw two textbooks of grades VI and VII amid controversy.

The books, “Onushandhani Paath” and “Onushiloni Paath”, were prepared for the 2023 academic year.

The government took the decision following a meeting with the curriculum apex body and subject specialists on February 9. Following the meeting, the NCTB issued a notification on the next day.

The notice states that necessary revisions will be made in some chapters of the history and social science books. Nevertheless, the rest of the chapters in the books can still be taught to students.
