World Diabetes Day observed

World Diabetes Day was observed in the country on 14 November, Sunday with the slogan’Access to diabetes care – If not now, when?’ to raise awareness to prevent this non-communicable disease, said a press release.

To mark the day, different organizations held programs, comprising free diabetes screening, discussion, rally and distribution of posters and leaflets with awareness messages.

Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology of Dhaka Medical College and Hospitaltook out a procession at Dhaka Medical College premises at 9:30am in the morning.

Adiscussion-meeting session was held where Principal of Dhaka Medical College Prof. Dr. Md. Titu Miah was present as a chief guest andBrigadier General MdNazmulHaque, director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital was present as a special guest. 

According to the survey of National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT), Some 1 Crore10 lakh people in Bangladesh suffer from diabetes. Among them, 26 lakh aged in between 18-34 and 85 lakh people have aged above 35.

According to a study by icddr,b in 2016, diabetes patients had two times more days of inpatient treatment, 1.3 times more outpatient visits and 9.7 times more medications than those who don’t have diabetes.

In 2019, the IDF ranked Bangladesh 10th of countries with the highest number of adults (20–79 years) with diabetes (8.4 million cases).

Diabetes is a preventable disease. Diabetes is a chronic, and largely preventable, disease that can lead to cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney failure, loss of limbs and loss of life.
