A total of 1.14 lakh kilogram of green chilli was imported in a single day through four land ports from India on Sunday following the government’s permission of importing 36,830 tons to curb steep price hike of the essential kitchen item, port sources said.
Import will increase today further, businessmen at land ports said.
As the price of green chilli started rising before Eid-ul-Azha, Agricultural Extension Department gave permission of importing the essential kitchen item.
After giving the permission, green chilli was import on June 26 last for the first time.
Three institutions imported 38,671 kg green chili through Sonamasjid and Hili land ports on that day. Due to Eid and weekend holidays, import remained stopped for five days from Tuesday to Saturday. But import began on Sunday again after the holidays.
Because of the green chilli import, prices started falling again.
Our Bogura correspondent reports: Price of green chilli at wholesale market became normal with a rise in supply. Green chilli is being sold at Taka 100 to Tk 150 per kg on the basis of quality at wholesale level, said importer Parimal Prashad Raj of Bogura.
He hoped when shipment of imported chilli from India will reach, price will fall further.
Bogura’s Raja Bazar wholesale merchants said Indian chilli will reach by Tuesday through Hili port and then price will fall further. Many trucks are waiting to enter Bangladesh through Hili port today.
Bogura district town’s kitchen market businessmen said earlier 5 tons of green chilli came to wholesale marker every day but price hiked as supply of green chilli was lesser than demand.
District agricultural extension department’s deputy director Matlubur Rahman said green chilli plants were damaged massively during the last dry season but now the district sees massive production of green chilli.
Now supply will increase as workers are spending busy time in harvesting green chili.
