The 1320 megawatt SS Power Plant has been connected to the national grid on Saturday.
The commissioning of the plant will start on Monday, while it will go for production in April, officials said.
The plant set up near the Bay of Bengal at Gondamara area in Banshkhali is owned jointly by the S Alam Group and Chinese company SEPCO3.
Chief Engineer of Bangladesh Power Grid Company Ltd. Morshed Alam Khan, who was leading a nine-member back feed committee, connected the power plant with a 400KV transmission line of national grid on Saturday at 1-56pm by putting the switch on.
Morshed Alam said the plant is now connected to the national grid and all the units of the plant will start generating electricity in phases.
Officials said 97 percent of work of the power plant project has already been completed. Construction of roads and canals constitute the remaining three percent.
Director of S Alam Group and the plant Shahidul Alam said, “Although the power plant is coal-fired, pollution of the environment will be minimum because of the use of super critical technology. The technology will enable the plant to use less coal to generate more electricity than other similar plants.”
The SS Power Plant is the first coal-fired plant in Bangladesh in the private sector financed by foreign bank.
