Today is the 15th death anniversary of eminent educationist, former secretary of the Govt. Founding Chairman & Honorary Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University, Founder of Mohammadpur Preparatory School & College, and numerous educational institutions, and social worker Quazi Azher Ali, the founder president and first vice chancellor of Bangladesh University.
On the occasion of his death anniversary, deceased grave at Banani graveyard will be visited on the day at 10.00 am and milad and doa mahfil will be held along with distribution of food among orphans. Besides, Quran Khani and doa mahfil will be arranged at Bangladesh University and his native village, Syed Mahalla under Fakirhat upazila in Bagerhat.
Quazi Azher Ali joined the then Pakistan Civil Service (CSP) in 1959. He did his Ph.D. from Cambridge University and served in different capacities as Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Secretary in different ministries like Home and Education. During his service period, he compelled Pakistani Govt. to establish oppressed and neglected Bangalis’ legal rights and demands in different ways.
His philanthropic activities increased in many folds after the independence of the nation in 1971. Being the secretary of 6 ministries in different governments including military regimes, he played a very key role in taking up and implementation of policies with his dedication, wit and intelligence in the interest of the nation. Being the Chairman of Rural Electrification Board, his contribution to rural electrification from Teknaf to Tetulia is considered outstanding and undeniable.
