17 get life term for killing man in Joypurhat

A court here today sentenced 17 people to life term imprisonment for killing a man in Panchbibi upazila of the district in 2009.

Judge Md Abbas Uddin of Additional District and Session Judge Court-2 pronounced the verdict this afternoon.

The convicts sentenced to life term are – Ariful Pramanik, 52, Abu Nasser Pramanik, 42, Dr. Md. Shajahan Ali , 70, freedom fighter Hadiuzzaman Pramanik, 80, Ashraf Ali , 75, Mohammad Ali alias Lal Mohammad, 60, Mohammad Ali Pramanik, 55, Zahir Pramanik, 56, Shamsul Alam, 54, Sayem Uddin Pramanik, 50, Obaidil Pramanik, 55, Saim Pramanik, 50, Rahim Pramanik, 57, Abu Saeed Pramanik, 46 , Abu Bakar Pramanik, 56, Banu Begum , 55 and Sahera Begum , 50, residents of Aymarsulpur union in Chakpara area of Panchbibi upazila.

The court also fined them Taka 10,000 each.

According to the details of the case, a case of the accused with victim Saleh Ahmed regarding land dispute had been going on for a long time. On May 2, 2009, the accused attacked Saleh Ahmed with Hasua, Bati, Ramda and Fala, leaving him dead on the spot.

Younger brother of the victim Azizul Haque Pramanik filed a murder case at Panchbibi Police Station in this connection as the plaintiff.

The investigating officer of the case, sub-inspector (SI) Mominul Haque, submitted charge-sheet against 23 people in the court on 24 June 2009.

After examining the record and witnesses, the court found 17 people guilty and rest of six people were acquitted of the case.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Nripendranath Mondal confirmed the matter.
