At least four leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Union were injured in an alleged attack by the activists of DU Chhatra League near the TSC and the VC’s home of the Dhaka University.
The incidents took place on Thursday (December 14) at around 1:30 pm.
The injured are Meghmallar Basu, president of Chhatra Union’s Dhaka University unit, General Secretary Main Ahmed, Deputy Secretary of Dhaka city Chhatra union unit Tajmir Tajwar Shuvro and Shahriar Shihab of private university unit.
The injured were first taken to the BSMMU and later to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. As Meghmollar Boshu suffered serious injury in his left eye, he was taken to the national eye hospital.
Witnesses said the leaders and activists of the Chhatra Union were having tea at the TSC on Thursday. When they were leaving by a rickshaw, Meghmallar Basu and Shuvro were attacked in Shahbagh area and severely beaten by the BCL activists.
The others were also beaten separately.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp in-charge Bacchu Mia said Meghmallar had an injury in his left eye. They are being treated at the emergency department, he added.
Shimul Kumvakar, former president of DU Chhatra Union, said, “our leaders and activists are being attacked without any reason by the leaders and activists of the DU unit Chhatra League.”
When asked whether they identified any of the attackers, he said, “I was not at the spot. Meghmallar Boshu may know them, but his condition is not good enough to talk. But I’m sure that the attack was carried out by the followers of the DU BCL general secretary Tanbir Hasan Saikat.”
Despite several attempts Saikat could not be reached over phone for his comments.
DU proctor Prof. Makshudur Rahman also didn’t respond to calls.
