Around 400 people of Chakma community from Myanmar are waiting to sneak into Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban district through the Ghumdhum border point due to ongoing fighting between the army and insurgent, Arakan Army, in Rakhine state of Myanmar for the last few days.
Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) in Cox’s Bazar Mohammed Mizanur Rahman confirmed the information adding that apart from the Chakmas, some Rohingyas are also gathering in the area.
“A critical situation has created in the area as a food crisis appeared among those living on the border due to the fight. That is why they are trying to enter Bangladesh to save their lives,” he said.
He also said that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have beefed up patrolling and security along the border so that no more Rohingyas or people from any other community could enter Bangladesh crossing the border.
Meanwhile, the Myanmar force has been dropping bombs from helicopters targeting the position of Arakan Army members from 10:00 am Monday.
On the other hand, so far 106 members of Myanmar’s border guards (BGP) have fled the country and taken shelter in Bangladesh to save their lives from the Arakan Army.
Earlier in the day, two persons in Bangladesh, including a Rohingya, were killed as a mortar shell fired from Myanmar fell inside the Bangladesh territory.
