6 dead, 50 hurt in Moghbazar explosion

At least six people were killed and 50 others injured in an explosion in Dhaka’s Moghbazar this evening.

FaisalurRahman, station officer of Ramna Fire Station said that they recovered six bodies from the spot following the explosion.

“The explosion took place around 7:35pm at a three storey building in Wireless Gate area. We are primarily suspecting that an air conditioner exploded,” he said.

Fourteen firefighting units are conducting rescue operations, he said.

Some rescuers reached the site where others were on the way on hearing that many people are still trapped under debris.

Photos and videos posted in the social media showed collapsed pillars and and shattered glasses all over a street in Mogbazar.

Some locals believe it was caused by a power transformer blast while some believe the explosion occurred inside the building.

The cause of the explosion was not clear immediately.

ArifurRahman, a shopkeeper in the Wireless Gate area, said many residents rushed to safety in panic on hearing a loud bang

At least 35 of the injured have been admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
