6 held along Jhenaidah border for trespass

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested 6 people, including women and children, along the Jhenaidah border for trespassing on Monday.

All the arrestees claimed to be citizens of Bangladesh.

BGB sources said some of the arrestees were trying to go to India while some were trying to enter Bangladesh without travel documents through the Baghadanga and Khoshalpur border in Maheshpur upazila early Monday.

A team of BGB Maheshpur-58 Battalion conducted a drive in Baghadanga and arrested them, said Assistant Director of the battalion Mohammad Nazrul Islam Khan.

Shafiqul Mandal, a broker who was helping them in crossing the border, was also arrested.

A case has been filed in this connection with Maheshpur police and they have been handed over to the police station.

With the neighbouring country grappling to contain the second wave of Covid-19, the border guards are on high alert to prevent the spread of the Indian variant in Bangladesh.

The government shut down border with India and extended the closure keeping movement of cargoes uninterrupted.

Bangladesh closed its border with India for two weeks from April 26 and later extended the time by 14 days on May 8.

On Monday, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said the Indian variant could not spread much thanks to the timely closure of the border.
