Abrar murder case verdict on November 28

A special tribunal has fixed November 24 to deliver its verdict in the much-hyped case of Buet student Abrar Fahad murder by ruling party activists two years ago.

Judge Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman of the First Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal set the date on Sunday after recording closing arguments in the case, Special Public Prosecutor Abu Abdullah Bhuiyan confirmed to Dhaka Tribune.

Twenty-two of the accused — now in jail — were produced before the tribunal during the hearing. Three others have been absconding since the case was filed.

Abrar, 22, was a second-year student of EEE department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet).

Buet students and the authorities found his seemingly lifeless body on the first-floor stairs of Sher-e-Bangla Hall and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead in the wee hours of October 7, 2019.

He was beaten to death by the leaders of Chhatra League Buet unit over his outspoken Facebook posts.

According to the police, of the 25 accused, 11 took part in the gruesome murder directly and the others played roles in the crime in various ways. Of the arrested, eight have given confessional statements before the court.
