Shipping ministry Adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain on Monday visited the cargo terminal in Brahmanbaria’s Ashuganj seaport to see the progress of its construction.
The adviser said Ashuganj seaport had been selected as the hub for constructing the cargo terminal. Earlier it was not a full-fledged port, he said. The construction of the terminal would expand trades by sea, he added.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) is constructing this new cargo terminal at the seaport with funding from the World Bank. This terminal has various infrastructures, including three jetties and storage sheds. The project is expected to be completed next year.
“When the World Bank finances, they do not do it blindly. If they think it is profitable, then they finance it,” said M Sakhawat.
Adviser Sakhawat expressed confidence that the new cargo terminal at Ashuganj would play a key role in boosting the region’s economy. He emphasized the importance of modern infrastructure in facilitating trade and logistics. The construction of this terminal, once completed, is expected to improve connectivity and enhance Bangladesh’s shipping capacity significantly.
