In celebration of the recognition of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’s renowned literary work ‘Sultana’s Dream’ as a UNESCO “Memory of the World,” five Bangladeshi women mountaineers embarked on a special Himalayan expedition recently.
Inspired by the theme ‘Sultana’s Dream Unbound,’ the mountaineering team recently returned to Bangladesh after successfully overcoming the challenges of the Himalayan peaks. This landmark all-women expedition was organized by the mountaineering association Abhijatri, endorsed by UNESCO, in association with the Liberation War Museum. The initiative was supported by the global payment technology brand Mastercard. The expedition was led by Nishat Mazumder, the first Bangladeshi woman to conquer Mount Everest.
The first-ever all-women Himalayan expedition has opened new horizons for spreading the global significance of Sultana’s Dream. This challenging journey has created opportunities to showcase begum Rokeya’s vision of women’s emancipation and social liberation on international platforms. Following the expedition, local organizers in Kathmandu, Nepal, announced plans to publish a Nepali translation of Sultana’s Dream during a press conference. UNESCO’s Memory of the World office in Bangkok welcomed and celebrated this unique initiative.
A press conference has been scheduled today at 11:00 AM at the Liberation War Museum to share the extraordinary experiences of this expedition. Nishat Mazumder and other members of the mountaineering team will share remarks, alongside Syed Mohammad Kamal, Country Manager, Bangladesh, Mastercard; Nusrat Amin, Head of Communications and Public Engagement, UNESCO; Sara Zaker, Trustee and Member Secretary, Liberation War Museum and Mr. Mofidul Hoque, Trustee, Liberation War Museum.
