Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has directed banks to freeze the accounts of Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and his family members, as part of an ongoing investigation into money laundering allegations.
The order targets members of the Sobhan family, including Sayem Sobhan Anvir, Managing Director of Bashundhara Group; Sadat Sobhan; their respective spouses; and Vice Chairman Shafiat Sobhan. According to sources, the BFIU instructed banks to block personal bank accounts and locker facilities for an initial 30-day period, under the authority of the Money Laundering Prevention Act of 2012.
The financial watchdog has also requested an update on the account details of Safwan Sobhan and his wife Yeasha Sobhan, within two working days.
The freeze order comes after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) initiated a probe into allegations of money laundering against Bashundhara Group’s chairman and his family.
