The disciplinary committee of the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) on Friday described Dr Sangjukta Saha’s Facebook Live from an operation theatre (OT) as completely unethical.
“She has done completely unethical things. She cannot come to Facebook Live from there,” said BMDC.
BMDC Disciplinary Committee Chairman and Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Secretary General Dr Md Ehteshamul Huq Chowdhury made the remarks at the BMDC office in Bijaynagar, Dhaka, in the afternoon.
They held a meeting on the recent Central Hospital issue.
He said that no doctor can make a video without the patient’s permission. In this case, what Sangjukta Saha did is completely unethical.
Ehteshamul, in response to questions from journalists about the renewal of the registration of Dr Sangjukta Saha, said she has applied for it, but the matter is not yet decided. However, the BMDC website shows that her registration is updated.
He said it is not that Dr Sangjukta is not registered. She is registered with the BMDC. But She did not renew it after 2010. She applied for renewal recently within two days.
“We have put her application on hold for now. We will see what our law says about this. We will take action accordingly.”
Regarding the decision of the meeting, the BMA secretary general said: “We want to draw the attention of the BMDC executive committee to the information that has come out in various media about the accident that happened at Central Hospital on June 18. The committee will take the next decision.”
He said: “We resolve the complaints that come to us through a process. If we find any violation of law, then we take action against them according to that law.”
In response to a question from journalists, Ehteshamul Huq said that under whom the patient will be under operation is his/her sole decision. The doctor under whom a patient is admitted should perform the operation. Even if that doctor is absent, the patient will decide whether to undergo the operation under another doctor.”
Dr Sangjukta Saha has been in the limelight for the last few days because of the death of a newborn and subsequently its mother following a c-section at Central Hospital.
Central Hospital on Wednesday served her a legal notice accusing her of making defamatory statements against the hospital over the death of Mahbuba Rahman Akhi and her newborn child.
Akhi reportedly fell victim to deception and wrong treatment following a misleading advertisement promising pain-free normal delivery by Dr Sangjukta Saha at Central Hospital.
She was apparently admitted under Dr Sangjukta’s supervision after her labour pain started.
An alleged botched surgery at the hospital led to her newborn’s death earlier this month and her’s as well eight days after.
Central Hospital and gynaecologist Dr Sangjukta Saha have since been playing a blame game over who is responsible for the two deaths.
