BNP has demanded cancellation of the Union Parishads formed under what it described as the fascist government of Sheikh Hasina.
The party made the demand during a meeting of its standing committee, according to a press release on Thursday.
The meeting of the BNP standing committee, the highest policymaking body of the party, was held with the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman in the chair on Monday.
The press release, signed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said the standing committee believes the Union Parishads, formed through a farcical process, were used as tools by the deposed Awami League government.
The BNP policymakers also viewed that holding a free, fair, and impartial national election is impossible while the Union Parishads remain in place.
The interim government, formed following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in the face of the student-led mass movement, dissolved city corporations, district councils, and the Upazila Parishad, appointing administrators in their positions.
The BNP standing committee also emphasised the need for a national convention involving important political parties, and local leaders and relevant stakeholders to establish peace in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
National Convention essential on CHT issue
BNP expressed concern over ongoing conflicts in the CHT region, saying such a politically motivated situation has been created in the region as part of a far reaching plot to destabilise the interim government following the the fall of the Hasina regime.
The meeting said that it is essential to convene a national convention with participation of the country’s important political parties, CHT leaders and concerned stakeholders soon to establish peace in the CHT districts.
The party urged the Interim Government to take steps for the national convention.
The BNP Standing Committee meeting felt that fallen fascists are carrying out incidents like attack and vandalism at shrines and industrial areas and mob-lynching in various parts of the country and trying to push the country towards anarchy in planned ways in order to return to power.
The BNP Standing Committee viewed that it is necessary to create public awareness through mass media and to enhance the publicity campaign by all patriotic political parties in this regard.
The meeting strongly condemned all these anti-social and anti-unity activities saying that it is necessary to immediately identify the responsible persons and bring them to the book.
BNP condemns Indian Home Minister’s remarks
The meeting strongly condemned the remarks India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah made about Bangladeshi nationals.
Noting that such remarks act as hindrances to maintaining good relations between the two countries, BNP asked the Indian union ministers and leaders to refrain from such remarks.
The party also expressed satisfaction over the condemnation and protest made by the Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry against such remarks.
The BNP standing committee meeting was held at the party’s Chairperson’s Gulshan Office; Tarique Rahman joined it from London through a virtual platform.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, Selima Rahman, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and AZM Zahid Hossain were present.
